We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

You will be an experienced Dental Surgeon with an enthusiasm to communicate your own knowledge and experience to undergraduate students.  You will have been fully registered with the GDC for at least 3 years with training experience within the clinical dental team.  You will be offered a structured induction.  Your major role will be the supervision and assistance to dental undergraduates or student dental therapists during their clinical allocation in restorative dentistry.  Students’ clinical work will involve general restorative care and management of patients who are experiencing pain or presenting with other complaints. 

The appointee will be expected to oversee all relevant aspects of restorative care to the level expected of a newly qualified dentist.  These are 0.2 full time equivalent posts (1 day per week) in term time (42 weeks per annum).  You will be eligible to apply for an honorary appointment with Newcastle University as part of the post. In addition to your teaching duties, you may be required to contribute to the delivery of NHS service treatment on an outpatient basis when the students are not in term.

Main duties of the job

The major focus of the role is to support the provision and development of clinical training for dental and dental therapy undergraduates within restorative, emergency and paediatric dentistry. Experience in teaching is strongly desirable.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Undertake clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate students in dentistry.


  • Undertake patient administration and other clinical, academic and departmental administrative duties and take part in the day to day running of the dental hospital.


  • Provide supervision and support to undergraduate dental students on outpatient clinics, lead seminars and, contribute to the didactic lecture programme and formal examination processes, if required.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BDS or equivalent.
  • GDC registerable qualification.
  • Will have been fully registered with the General Dental Council for at least 3 years.
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training in teaching / teaching qualification.
  • Higher clinical qualification
  • MFDS or equivalent.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 2 years post qualification experience.
  • Completed VT/FD/GPT or equivalent training programme in general dental practice or salaried dental services
  • One-year equivalent in recognised hospital post as SHO/ DCT2 or above.
Desirable criteria
  • Dentist in General or Specialist Practice
  • Experience as a Dental Clinician/Trainer in Salaried dental services
  • Experience as a Foundation Dental Trainer
  • Some teaching/training experience within the clinical dental team.

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential criteria
  • Ability to run a teaching service and participate in management process.
  • Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
  • Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to development.

  • An understanding of Clinical Governance.

  • Proven management and administration ability.
