Job overview

Due to service expansion we have a number of new posts available for registered Pharmacy Technicians in our Integrated Clinical Pharmacy services. The roles all involve a lot of patient contact with the aim of helping people meet their health goals with their medicines and draw on the full range of skills a Pharmacy Technician has; our ideal candidate enjoys talking to and helping people, works well in a team and gets job satisfaction from making a difference to their patients. We encourage innovation and ideas in our team and are always exploring new ways of working, we invest in a learning culture and in the wellbeing of our staff.

One of the posts will rotate between primary and secondary care, others are based in a GP practice or our award winning pharmacy hub in Gosforth; all of the roles are well supported by other senior Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists and GP practice teams and we welcome applications from people who haven’t worked in primary care before or recently qualified. The roles are all eligible for the fully funded CPPE primary care education pathway and we have a proven track record of providing post holders with the study time, support and supervision needed to complete it over 15 months.

Main duties of the job

Work with the multidisciplinary team(s) to:

  • resolve medicine related problems for patients such as stock unavailability, adherence support, alternative formulations in swallowing difficulties.
  • monitor safety and efficacy of medicines.
  • support patients practically to manage their long term conditions with lifestyle and medicines advice in line with outcome frameworks such as the NHS England Network DES and IIF.
  • support structured medication reviews and, after appropriate training, conducting non-complex medication review.
  • answer questions about medicines, prescriptions and transfer of care from patients, colleagues in the hospital, general practice and community pharmacy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To practice as an experienced pharmacy technician.
  • To practice as a registered pharmacy technician.
  • To provide a clinical service to identified patients.
  • In domiciliary general practice or Trust settings including reducing risk associated with the admission and discharge process.
  • To undertake a broad range of technical pharmaceutical activities in the dispensary, including providing advice to patients and other healthcare staff.

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects of pharmacy patient services, supported by practical experience gained by practical experience of an approved training programme.
  • In addition successful completion of an in-house competency based training programme or previous relevant post qualification relevant clinical experience which provides an equivalent level of additional experience

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Excellent customer care
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy, hospital and/or general practice computer systems

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Practical experience of working in a relevant clinical pharmacy environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience of working as a designated checker
  • Familiar with Medicines Information enquiry answering resources

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised pharmacy technician qualification plus experience to degree equivalent.
  • Registered with GPhC
Desirable criteria
  • Medicines Management qualification
  • Formal management qualification
  • NVQ Assessor qualification
  • An Accredited Accuracy Checking Qualification
