Job overview

The Estates Directorate is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Maintenance Craftsperson (Electrical) to assist with planned maintenance schedules, minor works and day to day reactive maintenance associated with Building Services facilities typical to an acute NHS environment.

The post is based at the Freeman Hospital and will be accountable directly to the Specialist Engineering Supervisor (Electrical) and overall to the Specialist Engineering Manager (Electrical). The post will include shift working requirements.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to perform a wide range of duties covering all aspects of Electrical maintenance applicable to the trade. They must also be capable of undertaking other tasks & duties as required during the course of a shift. They will be responsible for performing the following tasks on a day-day basis:

  • Electrical Inspection and Testing.
  • Electrical Defect Repairs.
  • Electrical Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM).
  • Minor works.

The main duties and responsibilities for this position are listed but not limited to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install electrical services, fixtures, systems and equipment to the trust standards
  • Electrical fault finding with the ability to carry out the necessary repair work
  • Carry out electrical planned preventative maintenance of all electrical installations and equipment to predetermined required intervals.
  • Adhere to the trusts electrical safety policies and standards
  • Carry out electrical testing and inspections of the sites distribution boards and electrical infrastructure.
  • Work alongside other estates services staff such as plumbers, carpenters or bricklayers as well as estates and facility managers. 
  • You may be required to travel between hospital sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To install, maintain, service and repair the full range of estates specialist equipment, plant and infrastructure.
  • Provides technical advice to other estates maintenance staff and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Act in the role of Competent Person, as defined by Health Technical Memorandum, for the Electrical Distribution (LV) system.
  • Undertakes condition surveys, evaluates inspection reports.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • • BTEC, HNC/HND Approved Apprenticeship, City and Guilds or NVQ 3 Technicians Certificate or equivalent qualifications in relevant topic
  • • Comprehensive post apprenticeship experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Qualification and experience in fire alarms, control systems
  • • Level 3 qualification in inspection, testing and initial verification
  • • Experience in a hospital maintenance environment

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of working in an industrial environment.
  • • Electrical services systems maintenance
  • • Expertise and a full understanding of electrical services and electrical control systems in a healthcare environment
  • • Thorough working knowledge of Building Management Systems
  • • Have a detailed working knowledge of the following: o Electrical Distribution (LV) o Fire Alarm Systems o Emergency Lighting Systems o IPS/UPS o Standby Electrical Generation Systems
Desirable criteria
  • • Hospital experience
  • • Electrical testing and inspection
  • • Understanding of mechanical systems.
