Job overview

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a fantastic opportunity for aspiring, customer focused, Electrical Craftsperson to be based at the Freeman Hospital. Working within a small multi-disciplinary team, the chosen applicant will help maintain the electrical infrastructure at one of the Top 10 Hospital Trusts in the U.K.

Main duties of the job

Candidates must be professional in all aspects with a desire to develop and improve. If successful they will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team performing a wide range of duties covering all aspects of Electrical maintenance and installation.

Candidates must have a positive customer focused attitude with a desire to improve and have served a relevant and recognized electrical craft apprenticeship.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To install, maintain, service and repair the full range of estates specialist equipment, plant and infrastructure.
  • Provides technical advice to other estates maintenance staff and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Act in the role of Competent Person, as defined by Health Technical Memorandum, for the Electrical Distribution (LV) system.
  • Undertakes condition surveys, evaluates inspection reports.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • BTEC, HNC/HND Approved Apprenticeship, City and Guilds or NVQ 3 Technicians Certificate or equivalent qualifications in relevant topic.
  • Comprehensive post apprenticeship experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification and experience in fire alarms, control systems.
  • Level 3 qualification in inspection, testing and initial verification.
  • Experience in a hospital maintenance environment.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an industrial environment.
  • Electrical services systems maintenance.
  • Expertise and a full understanding of electrical services and electrical control systems in a healthcare environment.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Building Management Systems.
  • Have a detailed working knowledge of the following: o Electrical Distribution (LV) o Fire Alarm Systems o Emergency Lighting Systems o IPS/UPS o Standby Electrical Generation Systems.
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital experience.
  • Electrical testing and inspection.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Fit and mobile.
  • Able to make workload assessments and allocation.
  • Ability to evaluate and solve problems in situ.
  • Ability to communicate verbally by phone and in writing to Senior Management and clinical users throughout the Trust..
  • PC and IT literate.
  • Ability to use tools and test equipment.
Desirable criteria
  • Electrical installation.
