Job overview
Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (NMPCE), based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, provides a range of scientific and technical services to NHS trusts and private organisations across the North East and North Cumbria. As part of our exciting new strategic development of NMPCE’s regional quality assurance service for ultrasound equipment, we are seeking to recruit an additional Clinical Technologist to join our friendly Ultrasound Physics Team, which currently comprises three Clinical Scientists, one Clinical Technologist and three Assistant Practitioners.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will play an important role in NMPCE’s Ultrasound Physics Team, carrying out quality assurance measurements on ultrasound equipment in hospitals and health centres across the region.
As part of this work, they will liaise with Sonographers and other clinical employees across the region and prepare draft reports for the users of the equipment. In addition, they will participate in the development of new testing techniques under the guidance of more senior colleagues. The post will involve frequent travel to other hospital sites, so a current full UK driving licence and a willingness to drive are both essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Providing technical aspects of diagnostic radiology physics services region-wide.
- Assist in a range of specialist healthcare science activities.
- Participate in research and development projects.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- HNC/HND or equivalent experience
- Registration with HCPC (radiographers) or eligible to work towards membership of the Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register of Clinical Technologists
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable criteria
- Degree in Clinical Technology, or a degree or equivalent qualification in another relevant subject e.g., Applied Physics, Radiography or Biomedical Science
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience carrying out scientific measurements or tests
- Experience of analysing data and writing reports
- Basic knowledge and understanding of all relevant safety principles, standards and legislation applied to the clinical use of ultrasound equipment
- Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to area of work
- Basic knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
- Good knowledge of safe moving and handling techniques in non-clinical environment
Desirable criteria
- Some knowledge of the physics and engineering principles involved in the operation of ultrasound equipment
- Experience of working with ultrasound or radiation measuring equipment
- in-depth specialist knowledge acquired through training courses
- CPD evidence
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Numeracy and accuracy of a high order
- Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and experience of applying them
- The ability to work under pressure
Desirable criteria
- Experience in recording data accurately to ensure documentation is maintained to a high standard
