A challenging and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Pharmacy Technician looking to develop their supervisory and management skills within Pharmacy Patient Services.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking to appoint a Deputy Dispensary Manager who will join the Dispensary Team based at the Freeman Hospital and under the direction of the Dispensary Manager, this post will be key in managing the day to day operations within the dispensary, including the drawing up of staff rosters organising workflow directing staff and delegating tasks.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also support new members of staff throughout their initial induction period providing training in departmental systems and processes.

Working closely with the Dispensary Manager the post holder will support and facilitate the implementation of planned organisational changes and upon completion of further training will be given the autonomy to manage dispensary activities, workflow and direct staff to achieve an efficient service. 

 

We are looking for a technician with a sound knowledge and understanding of patient services who can remain calm under pressure in a busy dispensary environment. The ideal candidate would be someone who wishes to build on and develop their managerial skills and would look to 

want to progress to a higher management position in the future.

 

The position requires a Technician with excellent communication and organisational skills, who can effectively manage their own time and workload and that of others to ensure dispensary operations run smoothly and prescription turnaround target times are met.

 

Applicants must hold S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning Knowledge. BTec in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification and must be registered with the GPhC. Applicants must also hold a recognised accredited checking technician qualification.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To perform the role of deputy dispensary manager undertaking a broad range of technical pharmaceutical activities across dispensary services, including providing advice to patients and other healthcare staff.
  • To manage dispensary services in the absence of the dispensary manager, providing direction to the technical staff working in the dispensary, co-ordinating dispensary operations and arranging support and cover for absent colleagues.
  • To practice as a registered pharmacy technician.
  • To act as an accredited checking technician for the final accuracy checking of dispensed medicines, in addition to performing final release checks on other nondispensed items, resuscitation boxes, over-labelled medicines and emergency drug cupboard transfers.
  • To support the training and assessment of staff within dispensary services.
  • To support robust stock management and minimise waste.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of pharmacy patient services, supported by practical experience and completion of an approved training programme
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Law and Ethics relating to the dispensing of medicines.
  • Evidence of professional CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of Trust policies and procedures relating to dispensary services.
  • Knowledge of current COSHH and Health and Safety Legislation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical procedures acquired through training, NVQ 3, BTEC or equivalent qualification plus experience to degree equivalent
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • An Accredited Accuracy Checking Qualification

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualification experience working in a hospital pharmacy patient services environment
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience of working as an NVQ assessor
  • Experience of working in an automated dispensary including practical experience of day to day maintenance of robotic systems
