Job overview

We are looking for a qualified technician to play an important role as a member of a professional team committed to providing a range of high quality technical work for the departments of Orthodontics and Child Dental Health and other departments of Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Applicants must be able to understand a variety of work procedures and practices within the specialist field of Orthodontics. 

The post holder will be self motivated have the ability to manager their own work load, they will be expected to assist in the teaching and supervision of other staff and  have good IT and communication skills.

If called for interview you will be required to undertake a small practical aptitude test.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to produce study models / working models for appliance construction, examination, teaching aids, diagnostic treatment planning. Construct removable, fixed and functional orthodontic appliances, vacuum formed appliances, partial dentures and various other appliances. They will also undertake PAR scoring and use IT skills as required by the department.

The post holder will be expected to develop new skills in line with new practices, eg digitisation, archiving etc and will also have a commitment to continuing professional development.

We are a small team within the dental hospital. We respect, support and motivate those we work with and are dedicated to providing and maintaining a high standard of patient service by the production of high quality appliances and various technical services for the patients, staff and students of the Orthodontic, Child dental health and other departments within the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the provision of a range of appliances produced to the highest standard as required by the departments of Orthodontic and Child dental health.
  • Production of casts for appliance construction.
  • Preparation of models for diagnostic treatment planning, teaching and
    examination purposes. 

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Dental Technician holding a BTEC Diploma or HNC or BSc Degree in Dental Technology.
Desirable criteria
  • Registered Dental Technician
  • Knowledge of Medical Devices Directives
  • Experience of working in a hospital dental laboratory

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competent in the construction of dental appliances and understanding a range of work procedures within Orthodontic Technology.
  • Knowledge of a range of technical procedures for the construction of Orthodontic appliances and model preparation.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Highly developed manual dexterity and the ability to maintain long periods of concentration.
Desirable criteria
  • Competent in the use of IT.
