FREEMAN HOSPITAL

Locum Consultant Anaesthetist

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team to provide Consultant anaesthetic cover for 6-12 months due to maternity leave of colleagues, thereby maintaining clinical capacity to treat and care for patients in this surgically orientated hospital.  To provide specialist peri-operative care including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anaesthetic management and post-operative care to patients undergoing a wide range of operative procedures, with on call participation on the general theatre on call rota. 

This post would be suitable for any post CCT candidate wishing to gain experience in the anaesthetic management of major surgical cases including hepatobiliary, ENT, urology, vascular, general surgery and orthopaedics in high risk patients. The Freeman also has an extensive surgical robotics programme covering urology, ENT, hepatobiliary and colorectal allowing any successful candidate to potentially gain useful experience in this field.  In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, and quality improvement..

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on the Specialist Register.

INTRODUCTION TO THE DIRECTORATE

Based in Newcastle you will be part of a dynamic tertiary referral centre that has recently expanded to provide services to the new Institute of Transplantation, which offers 4 operating theatres in addition to the established 15 theatre suite and the new 22 bed critical care unit and anaesthetic department. We are an internationally acclaimed acute service with a clear commitment to patient safety and high quality integrated patient care.

DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION:

The directorate specialises in complex major surgery including Hepatobiliary and intra-abdominal transplant surgery (liver, pancreas, kidney & kidney /pancreas transplantation) major vascular/endovascular, orthopaedics, colorectal, urological, and ENT/Maxillofacial specialities.

The Freeman also has an extensive surgical robotics programme involving urology, ENT, gynaecology, hepatobiliary and colorectal surgery. We have a well-established pre-assessment clinic that has been recognised by the CQC as national leaders in preoperative assessment, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and outcome prediction following major surgery and a nationally acclaimed acute pain service.
