DIRECTORATE : Community

CONSULTANT in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare

REF. 317-CON-21-193

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious, individual to join two excellent departments each made up of well-integrated multi-disciplinary teams of clinicians dedicated to the provision of high quality secondary and tertiary care. The successful candidate will work in the integrated sexual health service at New Croft Centre (NCC) and within the gynaecology services at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).

This 8PA post provides an exciting opportunity to work across two departments and to develop further links between the gynaecology department and the sexual health services. Applicants must have a certificate of completion of specialist training in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health or be within 6 months of completion.

New Croft Centre is the largest level 3 sexual health service in the region. Prior to coronavirus there were more than 32,000 consultations delivered annually, with over a third of the patients being seen for both contraception and genito-urinary medicine needs at the same time.  The centre offers sexual health screening and management of sexual infections and partner notification.  All methods of contraception including emergency intrauterine contraception and contraception for patients with complex needs are offered through a combination of telephone and face to face consultations.  The service is a key provider of HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis and offers remote self-sampling for asymptomatic DIY screening.  There is a busy HIV outpatient service based at NCC with nearly 400 patients managed by GUM and Infectious Disease physicians. Psychosexual counselling is offered within NCC.

Gynaecology at New Croft is an outpatient service providing medical gynaecology and complex contraception at NCC.  The successful candidate would join this service and would work two sessions at the Royal Victoria Infirmary offering hysteroscopy and abortion care. Currently there are 8 Consultant Gynaecologists working at the RVI gynaecology department. which is part of the Women’s Health Directorate.  The Women’s Health Unit is a specialist clinical area providing outpatient gynaecology services including one stop clinics for postmenopausal bleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding and rapid access patients. Furthermore, there are colposcopy, manual vacuum aspiration (MVA), hysteroscopy and a unique outpatient conscious sedation clinic for endometrial ablation and minor gynaecological procedures. The department is multi-disciplinary and a recognised centre of excellence in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. It is recognised national centre for endometriosis and mesh removal surgery.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer the successful applicant opportunities in education, research and audit.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
